Does Your Business Have A Purpose or Mission Statement?

October 29th, 2011

When we often start out in business, we do our business plan. We check to see there is a niche market, that there is actually a need for our product or service that we wish to provide. Then we check our resources, what materials or facilities we have to start this business with. Also we make sure that we have good financial fitness and make sure our bank account is full of vitamins so to speak, or that our financial situation is in peak health to be able to fund such a business.

All this is great action to take when starting a business. But often we forget what our business actually means. What is the direction that our business is taking and what purpose does it have to drive it forward into the future to ensure its success? It’s rather a long question to ask, and sort of a few questions all rolled into one, but really this is the sort of thing a business owner must ask themselves, because every company needs a mission statement.

When you think about the mission statement of your business, you want to ensure that the statement you are making about your business is one that is positive, something that recognizes what contribution you are making in the terms of the difference to the lives of people around you. Is it something that you can always look to uphold the credibility of your business and what it does for people or its clients? Often business and companies put an element of community or what they are doing to “give back to people” which is also nice to consider.

How Promotional Clothing Can Help Your Business

October 28th, 2011

Although many companies are aware of the benefits of promoting their business through gifts, they still do not really appreciate the capacity for promotional clothing to make a big impact. Business branding is an important aspect of bringing a company name to the attention of the public, and sometimes pens and mugs are just not enough to raise your brand awareness. Instead of relying upon these cheaper methods, it might be a good idea to spend some more money and invest in promotional bags and clothes to help get your message across.

There are plenty of different ways in which you can promote your business through clothing. Many larger companies provide t-shirts and baseball caps with their brand name on – people are sometimes even willing to purchase these items in order to create a link between them and the brand. For example, Formula One promotional clothing including polo shirts and caps is greatly prized by fans and will often fetch high prices in auctions. You may not be aiming quite as high as this, but you can still help to raise your brand awareness by promoting the business using these methods. Your promotional clothing can help your business to get ahead simply by creating awareness of the brand name.

Business of Design Tip: The Power of Live Conferences

October 17th, 2011

Every year, I go to at least 2-3 live events. To be clear, these are not local networking meetings, with rubber chicken for lunch. I’m talking about our design industry events and business conferences that inspire, motivate, and energize us. Anyone wanting to learn more, faster and be motivated by other designers and entrepreneurs who are further than where they are, should do the same thing. Here are just 3 major reasons how live conferences can help you grow your design business.

1. The Quality of Your Learning Any decorator who has ever heard the same material taught twice, over the phone/book vs. live from stage, would agree: learning from a speaker, while feeling their passion, enthusiasm, and personality has no comparison and is the best way to learn. That’s because your physical reaction to the speaker (your laughing, clapping, liking, trusting) actually enhances the brain activity of assimilating information. Plus, you are also in the audience of other decorators and entrepreneurs, who are feeling the same things you are. So your collective experiences create an unparalleled energy field and presents a perfect feeding ground for your brain.

2. Connections In the world of personal email, social media, and gadgets, it’s easy to hide behind technology. Yet, if you ask any successful entrepreneur, you will learn that the best connections are done face-to-face (and most likely outside in the lobby of the conference hall or even at the bar). I usually go into conference with a specific idea of who I want to meet – sometimes just shaking that person’s hand and letting them know you exist in the world is all it takes for them to be that much more receptive to your ideas later. While I do plan (or at least intent) for these meetings to take place, I also allow universe to take it’s course and bring to me that someone with whom I was just supposed to get acquainted. Last year, I happen to sit next to a woman, who ultimately became my accountability partner through this whole year. But it all started with a chance meeting, which I allowed to take the natural course.
